Action in the Face of Tragedy

There is a phrase in Latin, Facta Non Verba, which simply means Deeds, Not Words.

In the face of a massive tragedy such as Typhoon Haiyan, our first reaction is most often shock and horror. But once the shock wears off we soon slip into helplessness as we become acutely aware of our smallness and lack of control. What can one person do against the enormity of a disaster that has taken thousands of lives, left tens of thousands displaced and without aid? As individuals these doubts may have merit.

As the Church, however, we are strong.

As the Church, we can get behind incredible organizations that have an infrastructure built to respond in these very moments, the moments in which the Church should lead the way each and every time.

As the Church we should not fail to act out of fear, we should not relegate grace, giving, and kindness to things only mentioned in sermons. As the Church we should be the first to act.

Facta Non Verba

Please take a minute to look into these 5 organizations. They are people we know, they are people we trust, and they are working to be the Church to the people of the Philippines as you read this right now. You may only be able to give $10, or you may be able to give much more, either way let’s rise up to say to the thousands suffering that God is with them now, and His Church is standing for them.
