Leonce Crump II is the lead planter and pastor of Renovation Church. In 2006 he felt called to plant a church and through prayerful seeking of direction settled on the under-served area of downtown Atlanta. In early 2008 he and his wife moved to Atlanta from Tennessee to begin the process of planting Renovation Church. Leonce regularly speaks and preaches across the country at conferences and churches of all denominations. He also has a forthcoming book, which will be made public at the end of this year. Leonce enjoys boxing, studying theology, history, leadership, church structure and poetry. Leonce and his wife Breanna have lived in the Grant Park community of Atlanta for 3 years, and have two daughters.
1. Who is someone that inspires you today to be a better leader?
President Obama
2. Looking back at the past 10 years what are some of your biggest mistakes that you learned from that you would share with others to not repeat the same thing?
- You are never as good as you think you are
- You are only effective if you continue to learn
- Better at all costs is not better in the end
3. What is one mistake you witness leaders making more frequently than others? What are the steps to avoid this mistake?
Tunnel Vision...they get so focused on what they are called to accomplish that they cease to see the unfolding circumstances surrounding every decision they make toward that end. The primary step in avoiding this mistake is to consistently stop, evaluate, re-evaluate, and repeat.
4. What is one thing about you that "MAKES" you unique, that the Catalyst community probably doesn't know, but should?
I'm incredibly committed to the country of Cambodia. I love the people there, and spent quite a bit of time with them.
5. How would you describe yourself as a leader?
Compelling (I guess)
6. What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Your greatest strength's are also your greatest weaknesses.
7. Do you have a nickname? how did you get it?
Yes, Boss. One day people literally just started calling me Boss, even strangers I'd never met. (I'm not exaggerating that). Even Pastor Matt calls me El Jefe.
8. What did you want to be when you grew up?
A football playing politician (I achieved one of those goals briefly)
9. If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would you choose?
I would Jesus-juke you and say Jesus so that I could seem super holy, but it'd actually be Dr. King. He has inspired me on multiple levels, and I'd love to sit face to face with him and ask him some of the questions rattling around in my heart.
BONUS- if you had to be a superhero or famous cartoon character, who would you be?
My staff said Captain America, I agree completely
