Churches need young people and young people need churches. But do you wonder whether a watered-down gospel would help you attract young people to your congregation? You're not alone. But there's good news. Young people are drawn to churches that take Jesus' message seriously-- not just churches that try to be cool.

Based on groundbreaking research with over 250 of the nation's leading congregations, the book Growing Young provides a strategy any church can use to involve and retain teenagers and young adults. This track will touch on some of the book’s ideas for promoting church growth--spiritually, emotionally, missionary, and numerically.

Day 2 – Relevant vs. Authentic

I really believe that the leaders are investing in our kids not for any other type of outcome than simply to get to know them and learn who they are. And that seems to resonate with them. They know that they are truly being cared for, and that opens them up to listen to the gospel. They are not preached at in a condescending manner or given a set of rules to follow. They are just loved on.” —Andrea, parent

Pastors everywhere leave their skinny jeans at home. When parishioners were asked why they attend their church, many talked about the qualities of their leaders. Of those who did so, only 13 percent focused on how their leaders are relevant, while 87 percent talked about authenticity or other qualities unrelated to relevance.

The implication is that young people aren’t looking for leaders who frantically change their wardrobe or their lingo in order to connect.

Young people want leaders who are honest and comfortable being themselves.

These leaders understand that this younger generation has a sixth sense for authenticity and intuitively knows whether or not leaders are genuine.

Reflect: Do you ever feel pressure to be in pursuit of hip rather than holy? Have you ever had a personal experience of a young person in your congregation surprising you with what they valued in a leader?
