“Empty Your Cup”

“The value of a life is always measured by how much of it is given away.”  For Andy Stanley, founder North Point Ministries, this is the foundation of “Beyond You” leadership.  In this excerpt from Andy’s Leadercast Live presentation to 100,000 people around the world, Andy shows us how to lead beyond ourselves, starting with the concept he calls, Emptying Your Cup.  Here’s what Andy means by that:

“I don’t have everything it would take to fill your cup in terms of your leadership. There’s not enough in me to fill your cup. But my responsibility isn’t to fill anybody’s cup; in our organization, we say that our responsibility is to empty our cup. To find ways to pour into the people around us what we do know.  Not because I know all there is to know, but because it’s all I know.  So we look for opportunities all the time: what can I do to fill your cup?

Do you ever get stuck wondering what you have to offer others?  At any age, any stage, Andy explains, “You are smarter than you think. You know more than you believe you know. You have something to offer. And sometimes it’s as simple as sending an email and saying, ‘Hey, I just read this article, thought you might enjoy reading this.’  Emptying your cup is making sure that you show people that you value them and you want to invest in them; you want them to grow and know what you know.”

One of the most empowering steps you can take as a “Beyond You” Leader is to look for opportunities to empty your cup.  In the week ahead, ask yourself:

Who are you bringing along with you?  
Who would benefit from your encouragement and support? 

“If your leadership is not about you, it will live beyond you.”  Purposeful. Passionate.
